Opening Ceremony’s SS22 Collection
For its Spring/Summer 2022 collection, Opening Ceremony has drawn inspiration from a series of powerful portraits taken by Park Sung Jin, who famously captured the youthful charisma and attitude of South Korean school kids in the mid-2000s.
Featuring school uniform-inspired notes like collared shirts, pleats, and awkward haircuts, Opening Ceremony mixes classic codes with current cultural references, juxtaposing details from their respective Asian and American heritages to create something unique.
“For every teenage girl or boy, uniforms have always been something to deconstruct, reimagine, personalize,” explains Humberto Leon, the brand’s co-founder. “In our collection, we wanted to investigate this rebellious attitude towards the uniforms when these become a trigger to create something new and unique in terms of style.”
Opening Ceremony also enlisted Taiwanese Illustrator Li Kuanzhen to contribute this season, which saw him create an alphabet influenced by Chinese brush art, with each letter inspired by elements of nature and the animal world, resulting in vibrant and colorful graphics.
